A Hexadecimal editor can be used to edit a broad range of data files. We can edit hex files on Ubuntu and other linux distributions with command line editors, such as Emacs, DHEX, or xxd. If however we prefer the GUI, Bless is a great Linux Mint and Ubuntu hex editor.

We have prepared this guide on Linux Mint 17.2 and Ubuntu 15.10. It should work for recent earlier and future versions. It should also work for other distributions based on Ubuntu / Debian.
Install Bless on Linux Mint / Ubuntu 15839
The easiest way to install Bless is using the Software Manager on Linux Mint.
On Ubuntu, we can use the Ubuntu Software Center.
As far as we can tell, Bless doesn't have a repository to get the latest version, and according to its homepage, it hasn't been updated in a while.
This, of course, doesn't mean that it isn't a good GUI Ubuntu Hex Editor.
How to use the Bless Ubuntu Hex Editor 1u114v
The most important thing we need to use a Hex Editor is a file to edit.
For the example, we will use the Ubuntu Hex Editor to cheat at the popular indie game FTL: Faster Than Light, which is available for Linux through Steam.
Let's say we want unlimited scrap, which is the game's currency. We just need to edit the saved game file. We start a new game, save and quit, and then navigate to
/home/(our name)/.local/share/FasterThanLight.
We make a copy of the continue.sav file, in case anything goes wrong.
Then we right-click "continue.sav", select "Open with Other Application"...
...and select "Bless Hex Editor" to open it.
A hex editor is a complicated app since we are making changes straight to the code.
For this particular edit, we need to check "Show unsigned as hexadecimal" and press Ctrl+F to open the search.
We search for 1e00, which is the starting scrap for our ship on FTL. On the current version's savegame there are two 1e00 values; we select the one that has an Unsigned 32 bit value 0x300.
We delete 1E and 00 and type 40 1F.
We save the file, close Bless, and run the game. We now have 8000 scrap to spend, instead of 30, more than enough to buy and upgrade everything in the game, twice.
